The HEALTHY study: introduction

The pandemic of diabetes and obesity threatens the vitality not only of hundreds of millions of people but also of health care systems around the world. In the United States, in addition to over 20 million people with diabetes, at least 60 million people are at high risk for the development of diabetes as a consequence of impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance, often termed pre-diabetes. Most disturbing has been the emergence over the last decade of type 2 diabetes presenting in childhood and adolescence. This has been associated with reports of young adults developing disabling complications in young adulthood.

In response to these disturbing trends, in 2002 the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health sponsored a collaborative agreement, Studies to Treat Or Prevent Pediatric Type 2 Diabetes (STOPP-T2D), to examine both treatment and prevention of type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents. In this supplement, we present the rationale and design of the primary prevention trial called HEALTHY. HEALTHY is not an acronym, but a social marketing ‘brand’ used to identify, promote and market the study.
