2021, Journal of Surgical ResearchCitation Excerpt :Hereafter, we will only refer to the occlusive form of AMI, which at 65 % is the more common one.1 In most cases, the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) is occluded by a cardiac embolus due to valvular disorders, cardiac arrhythmias, or cardiac surgery.2-4 The onset of reperfusion causes a systemic inflammatory response that leads to activation of immune cells, and the coagulation system, and may potentially result in multiple organ failure.5-7
