Expression of hTERT mRNA has been reported to correlate with telomerase activity (Kirkpatrick et al., 2003), congruent with the notion that synthesis and expression of this subunit represents the rate-limiting determinant of telomerase activity (Counter et al., 1998). mRNA expression level of hTERT may have become significant had a 12-month resistance training intervention been employed, potentially reflecting increased telomerase activity, which could have had a positive influence on TL.

Expression of hTERT has been shown to correlate with telomerase activity in different cell lines [18,19]. Compared to Jurkat cells, a T-cell leukemia cell line with known high telomerase activity and primary osteoblasts used as negative controls, we observed moderate hTERT expression in all three GSTSCs used in this study (Fig. 3C).
