Introduction

Heimlich first described his life-saving maneuver to prevent choking in 1975.[1] Since then, it has been accepted by the American Heart Association and included in the Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers training as the recommended treatment for acute airway obstruction secondary to a foreign body.[2] Choking by foreign body is a life-threatening condition that accounts for over 4,000 deaths in the United States annually.[3] A recent review of the literature reported 41 cases of complications secondary to performance of the Heimlich maneuver.[3] We present the first case of pediatric diaphragmatic rupture after Heimlich maneuver.
