2009 wurde vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung die Förderinitiative „Gesundheitsregionen der Zukunft“ initiiert. Das Ziel war, eine langfristige, über das Ende der Förderung hinausgehende Zusammenarbeit von Politik, Wirtschaft, Forschung und Versorgung anzustoßen, damit diese Partner zukünftig gemeinsam an effektiven und effizienten Lösungen für wesentliche medizinische Probleme arbeiten. In mehreren Wettbewerbsrunden wurden insgesamt 5 deutsche Regionen ausgewählt: psychenet – das Hamburger Netz psychische Gesundheit gehört dazu [1].
