Abstract: Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy of CO2fractional laser combined with 5% minoxidil tincture in the treatment of Alopecia Areata(AA). Methods 109 patients with AA were randomly divided into three groups. Patients in the treatment group were treated with CO2fractional laser combined with 5% minoxidil tincture. One group of patients in the control group were treated with CO2fractional laser alone while another group of patients in the control group were treated with topical 5% minoxidil tincture alone. All patients were treated for 3 months. Results The cure rates and effective rates were significantly higher in treated group than in 5% minoxidil tincture-treated controls(47. 37% vs. 25. 00% for cure rates and 89. 47% vs.63. 89% for effective rates). The effective rates were significantly higher in treated group than in CO2fractional laser-treated controls(89. 40% vs. 60%,P < 0. 05). The cure rates were slightly higher in treated group than in CO2fractional laser-treated controls(47. 37% vs. 31. 43%). The cure rates in CO2fractional laser treated controls were slightly higher than that in 5% minoxidil tincture-treated controls while the effective rates in CO2fractional laser treated controls were slightly lower than that in 5% minoxidil tincture-treated controls. The recurrence rates for treatment,CO2fractional laser-treated controls and 5% minoxidil tincturetreated controls were 2. 94%,4. 76% and 13. 04%,respectively( P > 0. 05). No severe adverse effects were observed. Conclusion CO2fractional laser in combination with minoxidil is effective and safe regimen with lower recurrence rates for AA. It is an optional alternative for AA.
