Abstract

Psychosocial interventions are the basis of addiction treatment for three main reasons:

  • they improve outcomes of pharmacological treatments

  • they work better than doing nothing (Moos and Moos, 2003)

  • survey data show that help-seekers want such interventions.

This contribution does not examine the complete range of treatments but rather focuses on those psychosocial interventions with the strongest evidence base that are most consistent with the skills training of psychiatrists.
