An evaluation is made of a new dense, nonresorbable form of hydroxylapatite for the augmentation of deficient alveolar ridges. Surgical and prosthetic data are discussed.

Bioceramic coatings for tissue engineering

In recent years, the study related to the use of biomimetic materials for the repair of living tissues has gained significant interest in improving the quality of human life. Among various materials, bioceramics attract significant attention as alternative coating materials due to their physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. Alumina- and zirconia-based bioinert ceramics are used in total hip joint and knee replacement due to their excellent corrosion-resistant property. Bioactive glass and glass ceramics are known as bioactive materials, as they can directly bind with the bone as well as soft tissues. Bioceramics including calcium phosphate, bioglass, and hydroxyapatite are widely used for scaffolds and coatings because of outstanding osteoconduction owing to their mineral composition and similarity with hard tissue. This chapter focuses on classifications, properties, and tissue engineering-based applications of bioceramics and bioceramic coatings. Applications of metal-doped and polymer bioceramic composites are also highlighted. Furthermore, the challenges of bioceramic coatings in tissue engineering applications are also discussed.
Closed Approach for Horizontal Augmentation of the Maxilla

The narrow ridge in the anterior maxilla often requires horizontal augmentation for ideal implant placement. This article reviews the historical use of a closed, tunnel approach to augment deficient alveolar ridges and describes its application for augmentation of the narrow ridge in the anterior maxilla. The use of a tunnel approach through a vertical incision in the unattached mucosa provides access to the ridge while maintaining crestal attachments without displacement of the crestal attached gingiva. This approach is atraumatic and provides excellent access for placement of graft material for ridge augmentation.
