    DPC are more accessible [27], as large numbers of them can be obtained from teeth that are routinely extracted, such as the third molars (wisdom teeth) or deciduous teeth. Dental pulp- tissue or cells can be cryopreserved, and the cells can be cultured in vitro for several weeks without compromising their differentiation potential [19,28]. In comparison, the frequency of MSC in bone marrow aspirates is generally very low (0.001–0.01 %) and declines with age [27].

    STRO-1 or stromal precursor antigen 1 is a surface membrane marker whose gene and molecular weight are not fully clarified (Lin et al., 2011). It is expressed by bone marrow precursor cells (Gronthos, 2011), dental tissue cells (Werle et al., 2016; Pisciotta et al., 2015), endothelial cells (Ning et al., 2011), and fibroblasts (Chen et al., 2007). Although one of the most widely studied and best known MSC markers, the function of STRO-1 is not well understood (Ning et al., 2011; Kolf et al., 2007).

    Additional discoveries on DPSC, including recent protocols for their induction into pluripotent stem cells [25–28] and straightforward – although frequently unjustified – expectations by patients have favored their commercial exploitation [29]. In turn, all the above has increased the interest in long term dental stem cell banking [6,30,31] and raised debate on relevant ethical, legal and social issues [32–34]. At the research level, DPSC have been extensively characterized [1,4,35–37], also in relation to different tooth types [38] and in comparison with other stem cell sources [39–41].
