2017, Technical Innovations and Patient Support in Radiation OncologyCitation Excerpt :In 2013, our pre-treatment work-up changed towards routine inclusion of the Edmonton symptom assessment system (ESAS) [19], administered by a registered oncology nurse immediately before physician consultation and imaging for treatment planning, i.e. approximately one week before radiotherapy. The ESAS is a short, one-sheet questionnaire addressing major symptoms and wellbeing on a numeric scale of 0–10, which can easily be integrated into routine workflow in radiation oncology facilities [20,21]. The questionnaire had been part of routine assessment of palliative cancer patients in our Department of Oncology and Palliative Medicine for more than 10 years.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction in Post-treatment Breast Cancer Patients: Immediate and Sustained Effects Across Multiple Symptom Clusters
2017, Journal of Pain and Symptom ManagementCitation Excerpt :Understanding symptom clusters in cancer survivors may result in greater therapeutic benefits by integrating treatments for concurrent symptoms, thus improving QOL.50 In addition to QOL, multiple symptoms also affect prognosis and functional status of those with cancer.51 The practice of complementary and alternative medicine therapies, such as MBSR(BC), show promise on a potentially large scale, for self-management of the multiple co-occurring adverse symptoms often experienced by BCS.
Defining the Symptom Cluster: How Far Have We Come?
2016, Seminars in Oncology NursingCitation Excerpt :This method does not presume a theoretical basis or underlying connection among the symptoms within each cluster. PCA has been the method most commonly used for symptom clustering.16,19,52,56,59 For example, two studies of advanced cancer patients used PCA to identify symptom clusters using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS).
