Ambulance nursing: part three
Karin Bruce Ambulance nurse, South Älvsborg Hospital, Sweden
Björn-Ove Suserud Assistant professor, Pre-hospital emergency care at the school of health sciences, Borås University College, Sweden
Björn-ove Suserud and Karin Bruce examine the hand over of patients to emergency wards
According to Sheehy (1998), reporting and handing over patients to emergency wards, the ‘cement’ that binds two different clinical care organisations, and the reception of patients is an active nurse-oriented process. This begins with preparatory information the hospital receives from ambulance personnel before patients are delivered. The hand over consists of transferring oral and written information from the ambulance personnel to the emergency ward staff. In this way, ongoing patient evaluation and treatment can be assessed and can continue at hospital.
