Pressure on NHS resources has led to a drive for service reconsideration and the provision of more cost effective care. The Framework for Nursing in General Practice (Scottish Executive 2004) recognised the importance of practice nurses in providing care in general practice and encouraged a review of the skill mix required for healthcare delivery in this setting.
