This article provides an overview of the challenges of managing type 1 diabetes in childhood and adolescence, from diagnosis through to transition from paediatric to adult services. Topics addressed include the impact of diagnosis, diabetes education, psychosocial issues and multidisciplinary working. Case studies are used to discuss some of the challenges that arise at different stages of growth and development.
