Zusammenfassung

Ein Diabetes mellitus erhöht unter anderem das Risiko mikrovaskulärer Komplikationen wie Retinopathie, Nephropathie und Neuropathie. 90 % der Patienten sind vom Typ-2-Diabetes betroffen und weisen oft Begleitdiagnosen wie Hypertonie oder obstruktive Schlafapnoe auf, was Schlaganfälle und andere makrovaskuläre Komplikationen begünstigt. Viele neuro-psychiatrische Medikamente sind potenziell diabetogen und Diabetiker werden häufiger hospitalisiert als Personen ohne Diabetes. Ärzte sollten deshalb die gängigen Behandlungsstrategien kennen — vor allem die konsequente Vermeidung von Hypoglykämien. Diese Übersicht schildert wichtige Aspekte der Diabetesdiagnose und -behandlung für Neurologen und Psychiater.
