Obesity epidemic in European countries: from an unaddressed risk factor to a medicalized disease?

Since many decades obesity has become an international public health issue. Starting from the USA and then in Western European countries [1], nowadays obesity is a sort of pandemic which decreases quality of life and increases risk of illness almost everywhere in the world [2]. Defined by the WHO as the ‘new epidemic of the 21st century’, obesity can cause a wide range of diseases (e.g. diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, osteoarthritis, stroke, depression) and a growth in mortality [3], eventually increasing health care costs and decreasing economic productivity [2, 4]. Moreover, the recent Covid-19 pandemic could have worsened the obesity epidemic, especially for children because of school closures and home confinement resulting in physical inactivity [5, 6]. …
