Zusammenfassung

Ein Aufenthalt auf der Intensivstation tritt oft bei einer akuten, potenziell lebensbedrohlichen Krankheit oder einer Verschlimmerung einer chronischen lebensbedrohenden Krankheit auf. In vielen Fällen sterben Patienten auf der Intensivstation, nachdem lebenserhaltende Behandlungen zurückgezogen oder zurückgehalten wurden. Wenn die Patienten gefragt werden, bevorzugen sie zu Hause zu sterben, obwohl logistische und medizinische Probleme dies häufig verhindern. Daher konzentriert sich die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Pflege am Ende des Lebens auf der Intensivstation. Trotz vieler Bemühungen, die Qualität der Versorgung zu verbessern, deutet die Evidenz darauf hin, dass die Qualität in den Krankenhäusern erheblich schwankt und die palliative Versorgung auf der Intensivstation im Lauf der Zeit nicht signifikant verbessert wird. Diese Übersicht erörtert die Aspekte der Palliativversorgung, die speziell für Patienten auf Intensivstationen gelten.
