We have read and appreciated the study by Ujiki et al., “Parathyroid cyst: often mistaken for a thyroid cyst,” recently published in the
World Journal of Surgery [
1] The authors described their experience reviewing the pathology records of patients with a diagnosis of parathyroid cyst over a 5-year period with the aim to delineate additional diagnostic criteria and to develop appropriate treatment strategies for managing parathyroid cysts. They concluded that parathyroid cysts are more common in females, that they are usually located in an inferior gland, and that surgical management is usually unnecessary. Moreover, they suggested that no imaging modality can reliably differentiate parathyroid and thyroid cysts. …
