Zusammenfassung

Die Pathophysiologie der Sepsis basiert auf dem komplexen Zusammenwirken verschiedener miteinander interagierender Organ- und Regelsysteme. Ausgelöst durch eine Infektion und perpetuiert von der Immunreaktion des Organismus selbst entsteht ein Zustand dessen fatale Endstrecke nach heutigem Verständnis das durch Störungen der Mikrozirkulation ausgelöste Multiorganversagen darstellt. Eine anfänglich überschießende Immunreaktion wird durch den Organismus im Verlauf der Erkrankung kompensiert und wandelt sich in eine Dysfunktion des Immunsystems, die zu einer Prädisposition der Patienten gegenüber weiteren Infektionen führt.
Trotz der langen Geschichte der Sepsis und der enormen Bestrebungen, dieses Phänomen in seiner Gesamtheit zu verstehen, ist die Pathophysiologie bis heute nur in ihren Grundzügen verstanden.
