Photobiomodulation on “PC6” acupoint in controlling the gag reflex of children during intraoral mandibular radiography—a randomized clinical trial

Abstract

Purpose

The current literature indicates that acupuncture/acupressure of pericardium 6 (PC 6) acupoint prevents gagging in adults. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of photobiomodulation of this point in controlling the gag reflex of children during intraoral mandibular radiography.

Methods

Children in the age range of 6–12 years, with moderate to severe gag reflex, in need of bilateral periapical radiographic examination of the mandibular molar region were recruited into the study. The right/left sides of all the children were randomly assigned to either control or photobiomodulation using simple randomization. Children's anxiety levels were evaluated using the faces version of the Modified Child Dental Anxiety Scale (MCDAS(f)). While taking radiographs, simulation/stimulation of the PC 6 acupoint was done using a laser pen based on the randomization. Gagging responses were measured using the Gagging Severity Criteria.

Results

The median value of the gagging severity category while taking a radiograph on the side with simulated photobiomodulation was 2 (IQR 2–3), corresponding to severe gag. On other hand, the median value while the taking radiograph on the other side with photobiomodulation was 0 (IQR 0–0) corresponding to no/mild gag. The correlation between age and gagging problem index assessed using the spearman correlation test was non-significant. The correlation between anxiety scores and the gagging problem was also non-significant.

Conclusion

Within the limitations of the present study, photobiomodulation of the PC 6 acupoint appears to be a useful technique for controlling the gag reflex in children during mandibular radiography.
