Zusammenfassung

In der Menschheitsgeschichte kam der Qualität der Säuglingsbetreuung schon immer eine herausragende Bedeutung zu. Dies spiegelt sich weltweit in den Pflegegewohnheiten, besonders in Kulturräumen mit langer ununterbrochener Tradition, wider. Ein Paradigma für die Bedeutung der Säuglingspflege ist der Rückgang des plötzlichen Kindstodes („sudden infant death syndrome“, SIDS) nach Änderung der Schlafposition und -bedingungen zu Beginn der 1990er-Jahre. Die medizinhistorische Forschung zeigte, dass die risikoreichere Bauchlage als Schlafposition in der westlichen Welt erst Anfang der 1970er-Jahre eingeführt wurde und während ihrer 20-jährigen Anwendung die Hauptursache für den Tod von Tausenden Säuglingen war. Die aktuellen, nun nicht nur durch Tradition, sondern auch durch epidemiologische Studien belegten Empfehlungen zur SIDS-Prävention werden dargestellt und erläutert.
