Zusammenfassung

Die ökologische Mikrobiologie und ihr Bestreben, ganze Lebensräume genetisch zu beschreiben, brachte leistungsstarke Werkzeuge hervor, welche seit gut zehn Jahren ausreichend günstig, schnell und praktikabel sind, um auch die taxonomisch-quantitative Charakterisierung des menschlichen Dickdarmmikrobioms zu beginnen. Dies ermöglichte einen großen Schritt in der Erforschung der Mikrobiota-Darm-Hirn-Achse und ihrer teils transgenerationalen Einflüsse auf die Gesundheit des Menschen; sie beschreibt ein komplexes multisystemisches und multidirektionales Wechselwirkungsgeschehen zwischen Gehirn und Darm. Gnotobiotische Tiermodelle sind für gezielte Verständnisfragen dabei essenziell. In Verbindung mit der neuroendokrinen Stresshormonachse sowie den verschiedensten Entzündungsabläufen gibt es erste Erkenntnisse zur Rolle der Mikrobiota-Darm-Hirn-Achse bei depressiven Erkrankungen. Zu therapeutischen Ansätzen mittels Psychobiotika existieren bisher noch keine Ergebnisse aus klinischen Studien.
