Theoretically, for patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, esophagectomy with two- or three-field lymph node dissection remains the most promising treatment to achieve long-term survival. However, despite improvements in surgical techniques and perioperative management, postoperative morbidity and mortality after esophagectomy remain poor because of the tumor’s invasiveness. Therefore, a risk calculator for perioperative mortality associated with esophagectomy was established using the National Clinical Database in Japan.
1 This calculator consisted of preoperative variables such as age, physical status, medical history, and some blood testing. Because several studies in recent years have shown a relationship between infectious complications and survival, prediction of long-term outcome may also be possible by identifying the risk factors associated with short-term outcome after esophagectomy.
