In the post c-KIT era, true smooth muscle neoplasms of the GI tract have received little attention and are extremely rare tumors with a reported prevalence of 1%. It is important to differentiate leiomyosarcomas (LMS) from gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), as GISTs are responsive to tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
