Summary: Functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract are characterized by abdominal complaints and gastrointestinal pathological findings which can not be detected by standard diagnostic procedures. Recent research suggests a close etiological association between functional disorders of the gut and modifications of visceral sensitivity caused by molecular, biochemical or structural lesions yet unaccounted for.
