Abstract
Background
The scope of practice of plastic and reconstructive surgery is very wide, but it is largely under-recognised by lay people. This study aims to assess the public’s knowledge of plastic surgery in Oman.
Methods
A total of 12,183 members of the public completed an online survey where they selected the procedures that they think are performed by plastic surgeons.
Results
Fifty-seven percent of the participants thought that plastic surgery aims to correct both function and form. Plastic surgery was correctly chosen for the treatment of maxillofacial fractures (65.2%), cleft lip and palate (69.9%) and burns (53.4%). Only 29.8% chose plastic surgeons to repair hand trauma.
Conclusions
Despite the rapid growth of plastic surgery in the past few decades, it remains poorly understood and under-appreciated by the general public in Oman.
Level of evidence: Not ratable.
