There has been an increased focus on the role of enteral nutritional support at the time of major surgery. Specifically, in a large meta-analysis, the role of specialized nutrition, also called
immunonutrition, has been shown to reduce postoperative infections when compared with isocaloric, isonitrogenous nutritional products [
1]. The effect of this specialized form of nutrition was particularly evident in patients who had undergone major gastrointestinal surgery (
n = 2,083 patients), with reports of fewer abdominal abscesses and wound infections, and a lower incidence of pneumonia, notably in those patients who had preoperative or perioperative commencement of the nutritional supplementation. It is thought that the benefit relates to the supplemental arginine, RNA, and the omega-3 fatty acids in the solution, all of which have an effect on the inflammatory, metabolic, and immune responses that occur following major surgery [
