Abstract
Background
Low back pain (LBP) is a prevalent issue among athletes worldwide. Athletes with chronic low back pain (CLBP) have deconditioned extensor muscles, which reduces their lumbar extension strength and endurance. Thus, reliable, robust, and easy-to-use assessment techniques are needed to quantify trunk muscle strength and track intervention effects.
Purpose
This study aimed to evaluate the intra-rater reliability and obtain the minimal detectable change (MDC) value of the EN-TreeM dynamometer in assessing the back extensor strength of university athletes having CLBP.
Methods
Twenty-five athletes with CLBP were included based on the eligibility criteria, and were assessed twice, 48 h apart for their back extensor’s peak force and peak power using the EN-TreeM dynamometer. The MDC and relative and absolute reliability were calculated as per the guidelines for reporting reliability and agreement studies (GRRAS).
Results
The results revealed that there is a high level of consistency within the same rater for the peak force and peak power output, with a reliability coefficient of α = 0.99. The variation of the standard error of measurement (SEM) was non-significant.
Conclusions
The EN-TreeM dynamometer is a highly reliable device that can be utilized for the measurement of strength parameters in athletes having CLBP.
