Während die Welt im Jahr 1939 begann, im Chaos zu versinken, wurde nahezu zeitgleich die Rheumatologie als neue medizinische Disziplin geboren. Ausschlaggebend hierfür war letztlich die Umsetzung theoretisch-immunologischer Erkenntnisse in die praktische Medizin. Diese Entwicklung begann mit der Entdeckung des Rheumafaktors, nahm in den folgenden Jahren beständig an Fahrt auf und ist bis heute nicht abgeschlossen. Neben den Verbesserungen der diagnostischen Möglichkeiten bei rheumatoider Arthritis (RA) und systemischem Lupus erythematodes (SLE) wurden in jener ersten Periode von 1940 bis 1960 auch die ersten Resultate kontrollierter Therapiestudienstudien bei RA vorgestellt. Aber eine Neuentdeckung sollte alles überstrahlen und die Therapie rheumatischer Erkrankungen revolutionieren. …
