Rising Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Indian Adolescents: Insights Into Prevalence, Prevention and Predictors

The burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in children and adolescents is on the rise globally, as well as in India. In a systematic review by Wu et al., estimated incidence of T2DM in 2021 in Indian children and adolescents was 397 per 100,000 ranking 2nd in the world [
1]. In a study by Kumar et al., the prevalence of pre-diabetes/type 2 diabetes was 12.3% and 8.4% among Indian adolescent boys and girls respectively with obesity/overweight being an important predictor of disease [
2]. Lifestyle changes, such as the abundance of calorie-dense foods, reduced physical activity, and inadvertent use of telecommunications contribute to childhood obesity, which in turn leads to insulin resistance. Due to the increasing incidence and prevalence of T2DM among children in recent years, it is crucial to diagnose and manage this important disorder in children to prevent chronic complications and morbidity. …
