Schlechter Schlaf als Risikofaktor für das metabolische Syndrom

Zusammenfassung

Schlafmangel und Schlafstörungen sind in unserer westlichen Gesellschaft zunehmend endemisch. Gleichzeitig nimmt die Prävalenz und Inzidenz von Glukosestoffwechselstörungen und Adipositas als Kernkomponenten des metabolischen Syndroms stetig zu. In großen epidemiologischen Studien konnte bereits vor Jahren ein Zusammenhang von verkürzter Schlafdauer bzw. reduzierter Schlafqualität und einem erhöhten Risiko für die Entwicklung von Diabetes mellitus Typ 2 und Adipositas gezeigt werden. In klinisch-experimentellen Studien finden sich zudem zunehmend Hinweise darauf, dass Schlafmangel kausal mit Störungen des menschlichen Energiestoffwechsels verknüpft ist. So führt bereits kurzfristige Schlafrestriktion zu einer Verminderung der Insulinsensitivität, gesteigertem Hungergefühl und einer Reduktion des spontanen Bewegungsverhaltens. Vermittelt werden diese Effekte vermutlich über eine Modulation hormoneller, inflammatorischer und nervaler Signalwege. Diese Übersichtsarbeit gibt einen zusammenfassenden Überblick über die aktuelle epidemiologische und experimentelle Studienlage und erörtert mögliche pathophysiologische Mechanismen, über welche reduzierte Schlafdauer und Schlafstörungen zu Störungen in der Regulation der menschlichen Energiehomöostase führen.
