A massive increase in warfarin use from 1990 to 2010 began after the publication of the famous Copenhagen AFASAK study in 1989 by Danish neurologist Palle Petersen, who was the first to demonstrate that warfarin greatly reduced the incidence of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) [
1]. A convincing trial appeared thereafter and it gradually became clear that warfarin saved lives and reduced morbidity from cerebral ischemia, with a limited risk of bleeding. …
