Neben den klassischen Hepatitisviren A-E gibt es zahlreiche andere Viren, die unter bestimmten Umständen eine Hepatitis auslösen können. Dazu gehören beispielsweise das Cytomegalievirus, das Epstein-Barr-Virus, Herpes-Simplex-Viren, das Varicella-Zoster-Virus und Humane Herpesviren. Einige verursachen systemische Infektionen mit Leberbeteiligung, andere betreffen fast ausschließlich die Leber. Klinisch lässt sich eine Non-A-E-Virushepatitis nicht von einer Virushepatitis durch eines der klassischen Hepatitisviren unterscheiden. Bei Verdacht auf eine Infektion oder Reaktivierung eines Virus sollte das Virus per PCR im Blut nachgewiesen. Da der Verlauf von Hepatitiden durch diese Viren meist selbstlimitierend ist, ist eine Therapie nur sehr vereinzelt erforderlich. Prinzipiell sind Aciclovir, Ganciclovir, Valcanciclovir und Foscarnet gegen einzelne Viren wirksam.
