Abstract

Purpose

Using a controlled randomized trial, two therapeutic methods, topical use of an aloe gel and low-level laser therapy were compared. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of the topical aloe gel to treat tendinitis in a team of elite volleyball players.

Methods

35 athletes were enrolled and divided into two groups: 19 athletes belonging to group G, who have been subjected to three daily topical application of an aloe gel; 16 athletes, belonging to group L, were subjected to a daily session of low-level laser therapy for 10 days.

Results

In all athletes of both groups, we observed a progressive reduction of the pain, but more significant in patients with an Achilles tendinitis (P < 0.004), treated with gel. There was a statistically significant difference (P < 0.0001) between the groups about the time elapsed since the start of the treatment and the restart of the training in gym and the return to play volley, especially in athletes treated with gel.

Conclusions

Based on our data, we have shown that it is possible to obtain a remission of tendinitis through the constant application of aloe gel. This is a great advantage, especially for professional athletes, who can use it anywhere and at any time of the day, continuing to care even when they have to travel to play away from home, according to the calendar of the season.
