Supporting an adequate intravascular volume is a cornerstone in treating the haemodynamically unstable patient. Clinical studies provide guidance when selecting fluids but a simple, safe and reproducible method to assess fluid responsiveness remains elusive. Central venous pressure or other static pressures, while seemingly ubiquitous in clinical practice [1], do not indicate the volume state [2]. It is in this context that the passive leg raising (PLR) test has emerged. …
