Die International Stroke Conference (ISC) 2011 fand vom 09. bis 11. Februar in Los Angeles statt. Es kamen über 4500 Teilnehmer. Ermutigende Daten wurden von dem Veranstalter selbst, der American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) präsentiert: In den letzten 10 Jahre ist die Rate an Schlaganfalltodesfällen um mehr als 30% gesunken [20]. Diese erfreuliche Nachricht wurde vom Präsidenten der AHA/ASA, R.L. Sacco, vornehmlich auf eine verbesserte Prävention im Laufe der vergangenen Jahre zurückgeführt. Neuere Erkenntnisse aus diesem Bereich wurden in der ersten Sektion der ISC vorgestellt. Hier berichtete unter anderem A.K. Mistri aus Leicester, UK, von dem Einfluss der Blutdruckvariabilität auf das Schlaganfallrisiko: Wie P.M. Rothwell et al. bereits im vergangen Jahr zeigen konnten, war die präventive Überlegenheit von Kalziumkanalblockern durch ausgeprägte Blutdruckschwankungen bei Betablockern bedingt [21]. G.J. Hankey aus Perth, Australien, fasste in der gleichen Sektion die Ergebnisse der VITATOPS-Studie zusammen, aus der sich kein gesicherter Nutzen von Folsäure, Vitamin B6 oder Vitamin B12 in der Schlaganfallprävention ableiten ließ [27]. …
