Nowadays, neurosurgical residents profit from a wide range of available reference works for both daily clinical use – when you really just need to look up that one thing – as well as for revising topics in-depth, e.g. before board examinations. Some are extremely detailed and examine the literature meticulously for every clinical question – true textbooks. Others try to convey only the basics of surgical approaches and common clinical decisions and provide a general overview. In exchange, these are often pocket-sized “neurosurgical companions.” Recently, a trend towards a new subset of the latter has been established: neurosurgical textbooks that provide a brief review of all relevant topics, complete with cases and algorithms, and conceived to prepare the reader for written and oral board examinations in a time-efficient (“high yield”) way. …
