For most of its existence cancer epidemiology has been the study of cancers defined on an organ-specific basis, often taking our cue from the WHO International Classification of Disease (ICD). Thus we study breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer etc. at least initially as single entities, in the hope that the causes of most cases defined in this manner can be ascertained. Many of our successes have been, at least initially, based on the construct of a single organ-specific entity. …
