Abstract

Politzer (1885) was one of the first to construct an atlas using plates from drawings to show the different appearances of the tympanic membrane. Molinie (1918) suggested stereoscopic photography of the tympanum. Later, photography using the operating microscope provided the only teaching material for many years. This was initiated by House (1959) and Myers (1961). In fact, this procedure was reserved mainly for views taken during surgical operations, and only more rarely during otoscopic examinations. Then came the advent of endoscopic photography, pioneered by Takahashi (1970) among others. This method had the advantage of bringing the objective to within less than 1 cm from the tympanic membrane.
