Der Zustand der Haare ist ein wichtiges Element des menschlichen Selbsterlebens und der Selbstdarstellung als auch der menschlichen Fremdwahrnehmung und Fremdbeurteilung. In den Haaren kommen seelisches Erleben und Wünschen genauso wie Wohlbefinden, Gesundheit oder Krankheit zum Ausdruck. Gleichzeitig werden mit den Haaren sozial wünschenswerte Merkmale der eigenen Persönlichkeit vermittelt, die auf andere einen nachhaltigen Eindruck machen und zu Schlussfolgerungen auf Charakter, Befindlichkeit und Gesundheitszustand führen. Diese wechselseitige Beziehung zwischen Körper und Seele macht verständlich, warum das Haar, das mit soviel Emotionen und einer hohen Selbst- und Fremdaufmerksamkeit verbunden ist, das körperliche Wohlbefinden ganz beträchtlich beeinflussen kann, und umgekehrt.
