Delirium is a serious and common condition in the intensive care unit (ICU) [
1]. Multicomponent, non-pharmacological interventions are generally recommended to both prevent and treat delirium, whereas routine use of pharmacological treatment is not recommended [
2]. Despite these recommendations, pharmacological treatment is frequently used to treat delirium in ICU patients [
3], with haloperidol, a typical antipsychotic, used most frequently [
4]. The earliest reports of haloperidol use for agitated delirium indicated it could effectively treat agitation with few, if any, respiratory or cardiovascular effects [
5], but only recently have high-quality randomised, placebo-controlled trials examined the effects of haloperidol in critically ill patients with delirium. …
