The use of diverting loop ileostomy after low rectal resections has been widely practiced to reduce the risk of anastomotic leaks and reoperation [
1,
2]. Patients, however, are not necessarily excited about having stomas. In Dupuytren’s words, “Of all the diseases to which a man is liable, there is no one so inconvenient as the artificial anus. How wretched is the patient from whom, despite his will, the alimentary, bilious and fecal matter contained in his intestines are constantly escaping” [
3]. A recent study suggested that even temporary stomas are associated with decreased body image and difficulty with sexual activity [
4]. It is no wonder that surgeons are under constant pressure to take the stomas down as soon as possible. In a randomized, nonblinded trial published recently, closure of stomas after only 8 days was less morbid compared with closure at 2 months following rectal resections [
