Stigma und Stigmatisierung von psychischen Krankheiten

Zusammenfassung

An einer psychischen Störung erkrankt zu sein, gilt in den meisten Gesellschaften immer noch als Stigma. Betroffene Personen leiden an der weitverbreiteten Missbilligung und Ablehnung psychisch erkrankter Menschen. In vielen Fällen werden Betroffene sozial ausgegrenzt, diskriminiert und damit ihre soziale Teilhabe an der Gesellschaft verhindert. Stigmatisierungsprozesse können unterschiedliche Formen annehmen. Die öffentliche Stigmatisierung („public stigma“) bezieht sich auf negative Einstellungen, die in der Allgemeinbevölkerung bestehen. Dagegen beschreibt die Selbststigmatisierung („self stigma“) die Internalisierung und die Akzeptanz dieser negativen Einstellungen bei den Betroffenen selbst. Beide Formen tragen dazu bei, dass Menschen sich scheuen, offen über ihre Krankheit zu kommunizieren und professionelle Hilfe in Anspruch zu nehmen. Es besteht daher auf gesellschaftlicher und insbesondere auf therapeutischer Ebene Aufklärungs- und Handlungsbedarf, um der Stigmatisierung psychischer Krankheiten entgegenzutreten.
