The US Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) is proposing universal standards for prescription medication labels covering the content, language, format and appearance. Under the proposed standards, labels would give explicit instructions using clear simple terms, include the purpose for use and emphasise instructions or other key information. The need to improve the readability of labels with high-contrast printing and large font size, to organise the label in a patient-centred manner and to limit auxiliary information are also covered. The proposed standards are to undergo a 90-day public comment period, during which the USP will accept feedback from healthcare professionals, consumers and other interested parties. …
