This chapter deals with a limited number of subjects selected from the wide area of outdoor lighting applications. Emphasis is on the numerical design of road lighting installations, particularly on the luminance design. The CIE program LUCIE for computer-assisted luminance-design methods is discussed. Other subjects that are covered in this chapter are the road lighting for developing countries, the maintenance of lighting installations, and simplified design methods.
A number of important aspects of the design of outdoor lighting installations are not covered in this chapter. The main reason is that they do not involve many fundamental aspects of the type that are the core of this book, viz. the mathematical, physical, and physiological basis of vision and lighting. However, we will mention a few of these subjects here, and refer to the relevant literature for the benefit of those who may want further information. To begin with, we will list again several of the standard books on illuminating engineering where most subjects are treated in some detail: Baer 1990; Baer, ed., 2006; Boyce, 2003; De Boer, ed., 1967; Eckert, 1993; Forcolini, 1993; Hentschel, 1994; Hentschel ed., 2002; Narisada & Schreuder, 2004; Ris, 1992; Schreuder, 1998, 2001 b; Van Bommel & De Boer, 1980.
-
Vehicle lighting and marking (Alferdinck, 1981; Alferdinck & Padmos, 1986; Narisada & Schreuder, 2004, sec. 12.2; Roszbach, 1972; Schreuder, 1976; Schreuder & Lindeijer, 1987; Schmidt-Clausen & Bindels, 1974).
-
Tunnel lighting (CEN, 2003; CIE, 1973, 1984, 1990a; NSVV, 1963, 1991, 2002; Schreuder, 1964, 1967; Vos & Padmos, 1983).
