In this chapter, the human observer is discussed, focussing on the visual perception aspects. In Chapter 6, the physical and anatomical aspects of vision are discussed. Chapter 7 concentrates on the visual performance aspects, and in Chapter 9 colour vision is discussed.
In this chapter, emphasis is on the derived visual functions like the field of view, flicker-effects, subjective brightness, and the detection of movement. The main subject of this chapter is glare, more in particular disability glare. Emphasis is placed on the stray light theory of disability glare. The subject with the greatest interest is the CIE Standard Glare Observer, and the influences of glare angle, age, and the pigmentation of the iris in it. The age effects of disability glare are highlighted.
Finally, discomfort glare is briefly discussed. In outdoor lighting, this aspect is mainly of historic interest.
