Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 544))

Abstract

One way to determine the function of a gene in an organism is to examine the mutation phenotype of that gene. An entirely new technique, named RNA interference (RNAi) that emerged recently, seems an almost ideal tool for ’loss-of-function’ analysis of gene expression as it proves to be highly efficient and provides reproducible results in a wide range of organisms. This chapter discusses the discovery of RNAi, its underlying mechanisms and possible biological functions.
