Abstract

Malignant musculoskeletal tumours are rare in children, infrequently presenting to the general orthopaedic surgeon. Although there is a diverse range of cell lineage and clinical presentation, greater than 80 % of the malignant tumours are an osteosarcoma or Ewing’s sarcoma. Prompt recognition and a knowledge of management principles including when to refer to a specialist centre is essential.

This chapter provides an overview of the more common malignant and benign musculoskeletal tumours that present in childhood. We aim to outline management principles to guide non-specialists in their assessment and approach to these complex patients
