Paediatric Orthopaedics in Clinical Practice

Abstract

The majority of limps will resolve with minimal treatment and no long-term sequelae. Always remember that a limp can also be the primary presentation of far more significant pathology. For the vast majority of cases, a focused clinical history, a well-rehearsed thorough examination and the appropriate utilisation of basic investigations will differentiate between benign and the serious pathologies. The importance of appropriate periods of observation and follow-up cannot be overstated.

This chapter will outline the rationale underlying a safe, systematic approach to the limping child. Key findings in the main differential diagnoses will be given; further detail along with their treatment and outcomes are covered in the relevant chapters.
