Abstract

Coxa vara is a rare deformity of the proximal femur characterised by reduced neck-shaft angle, associated with reduced femoral anteversion, causing abductor insufficiency. It may be congenital, developmental or acquired. The primary forms usually present before 6 years of age. Diagnosis is made by plain AP radiographs of the pelvis and treatment is determined by measurement of the Hilgenreiner-epiphyseal angle, with valgus osteotomy indicated where this is greater than 60°, or 45–60° and progressive with marked gait abnormality.
