Urinary Calcium Excretion and Net Acid Excretion: Effects of Dietary Protein, Carbohydrate and Calories

Abstract

The incidence of kidney stones composed of calcium oxalate and apatite is increased among the populations of developed nations 1,2 This increased frequency may be related to the dietary intake of animal protein3. Dietary protein intake is a determinant of endogenous fixed acid production, renal net excretion and external acid balance4,5 In turn, acid production, renal net acid excretion and acid balance are determinants of urinary Ca excretion and Ca balance6. Increased rate of urinary Ca excretion is one of the risk factors for Ca stone formation.
